After a home becomes unusable, temporary housing decisions can arrive before the full timetable is known. A clear brief helps providers offer relevant options while keeping insurer approval separate from an accommodation inquiry.
Describe the household and location needs
Give the number of required bedrooms, preferred area, essential access features and anticipated dates. If the return-home date is uncertain, say so. Include practical requirements such as pets, parking or school and work travel without publishing sensitive information about household members.
Ask providers for the actual accommodation address, inventory and arrival process. A company’s regional service area is not a specific home. Keep availability marked as requested or quoted until it has been confirmed through the agreement process.
Separate quotation from coverage
Request an itemized quote covering housing, furniture, utilities, parking and any other proposed charge. Ask the insurer or authorized claims contact what documentation is required and which costs need approval. Do not assume that a provider’s invoice determines what the policy covers.
California’s Department of Insurance publishes information about additional living expenses after wildfire displacement. That resource provides official context; coverage, limits and the treatment of a particular charge still need to be addressed through the policy and claims process.
Give uncertain dates a review point
Record the initial agreed period, extension-request deadline and who may approve a change. If repair timing shifts, tell the housing coordinator early enough to explore an extension or another home.
Keep accommodation invoices and approval correspondence organized by period. Avoid including claim identifiers, property access information or private documents in public request boards. A general MIMO inquiry only needs enough detail to begin matching or planning.
The useful outcome is a confirmed home and a clear record of what was proposed, approved and paid. It is not a promise that every temporary-housing expense will be reimbursed. Providers, households and claims teams each need to know their part of that process.
