What to confirm before calling an apartment pet-friendly

Ask the operator about animal policies, written approvals, recurring costs and the practical daily setup before treating a listing as pet-friendly.

MIMO field notes · Apartment search · · MIMO editorial team

A pet-friendly label is only the beginning of a conversation. The relevant policy may depend on the animal, the unit, the agreement and the property’s current rules. Confirm the details before choosing a home or arranging a move.

Request the written policy

Tell the leasing office about the animal you intend to keep and ask what approval process applies. Separate ordinary pet policies from accommodation requests; they are not interchangeable categories. If you need an accommodation, use the property’s appropriate process and seek qualified guidance about your rights rather than interpreting a directory filter as an eligibility decision.

For an ordinary pet inquiry, ask which charges are recurring, which are upfront, whether any are refundable and where they appear in the agreement. Keep the approval tied to the specific home and animal. A verbal “we allow pets” does not answer every practical or contractual question.

Tour the daily route

  • Walk from the unit to a suitable outdoor area.
  • Check elevator, stairs and entrance arrangements.
  • Ask how waste is handled and where supplies can be stored.
  • Confirm any common-area access restrictions.
  • Ask whom to contact if the animal’s circumstances change.

Do not assume a landscaped area is designated for pets or that an attractive balcony is an appropriate unattended space. Make decisions around the animal’s actual needs, the building’s rules and professional advice where needed.

Check the furnished inventory

If the apartment comes furnished, ask about the furniture condition report and damage process. Determine whether covers, rugs or other items may be changed with permission. Document the condition at move-in so existing marks are not confused with later damage.

For operators, keep the public description specific and current. “Pet policy available on request” is more useful than an unsupported promise. For renters, a written confirmation and a workable daily routine are stronger evidence than a badge on a search result.
