Apartment parking questions to settle before signing

Check whether parking is assigned, separately charged, usable by your vehicle and available when you actually need it.

MIMO field notes · Apartment search · · MIMO editorial team

“Parking available” can mean an included space, an extra-cost garage, a waitlist or nearby public parking. Before comparing two apartments, find out what the phrase means for your vehicle and your agreement.

Identify the actual arrangement

Ask whether the space is assigned, shared or first-come. Confirm whether it is included in the rent and whether parking has a separate agreement. For tandem parking, ask how vehicles are moved and who has access. If there is a waitlist, do not treat the hoped-for space as part of a confirmed offer.

Request any vehicle restrictions, access-device fees and visitor rules in writing. A household with two vehicles should confirm two usable arrangements rather than assuming an additional car can use guest parking indefinitely.

Measure what matters

Check the garage entrance, turns, space width and overhead clearance against the vehicle you intend to use. Ask permission to inspect the offered space. If you carry equipment or need to load furniture, confirm loading arrangements separately; a parking entitlement does not necessarily provide a delivery bay.

Use Question to ask
Daily commute Can I access the space at my usual hours?
Visitors Is registration required, and for how long?
Electric vehicle What charging access and billing are actually available?
Move-in Where can the vehicle or delivery truck stop?

Compare confirmed costs

Add parking charges to the ordinary monthly housing payment. Keep temporary move-in permits and access deposits in separate upfront categories. If charging is offered, ask about payment, sharing and any availability limits instead of assuming unrestricted use.

Do a final walk from the space to the unit entrance. Lighting, distance, stairs and how you carry groceries may influence the daily experience more than the parking label. If an essential arrangement remains unresolved, record it as a condition of your choice and ask the office to confirm it before you commit.
