Requesting accessible furnished housing: describe the features you need

Ask about specific access features, measurements and the actual unit instead of relying on a general accessibility label.

MIMO field notes · Furnished stays · · MIMO editorial team

Accessibility needs are individual. A general badge or property description cannot establish whether a particular home works for you. Describe the features you need without sending private medical details through an ordinary housing inquiry.

Make the questions measurable

You might need information about the entrance route, steps, door openings, bathroom layout, bed access or elevator arrangements. Ask for the relevant measurements and photographs of the actual proposed unit. State what you need to be able to do rather than assuming the provider interprets a broad label the same way you do.

If a companion, adviser or occupational professional helps evaluate the setup, decide what information they need. The housing provider should confirm the physical features and its process, not make a medical judgment about suitability.

Include the furnished layout

Furniture can change usable circulation even when the empty room looks suitable. Request the bed and seating arrangement and ask whether items may be repositioned by approved personnel. Check the route with furniture in place, including access to windows, controls and storage.

Ask who handles a request for an adjustment or accommodation and what process applies. Legal rights and obligations can depend on the facts; use qualified guidance when needed. HUD resources can help locate housing information and assistance, but a directory tag is not a ruling on an individual request.

Confirm arrival and backup arrangements

Discuss the key handoff, parking or drop-off, luggage and the contact available at arrival. If a lift or another critical feature is unavailable, ask the provider about its procedure and what alternatives can actually be confirmed.

Keep the agreed features attached to the exact accommodation identifier. A different unit in the same building may have a different layout. Review any proposed substitution before accepting it. The most useful outcome is a specific, documented setup that has been assessed against your needs, not a broad assurance based on the property’s category.
